What is ReFocusing Leaders

Cross-cultural ministry is certainly one of the most joy-filled yet also stress-filled vocations there is. As missionaries and NGO workers, our vision for changing lives and transforming communities can easily get bogged down by the overwhelming needs of people, by the challenges of leading others, and by the stresses of living and raising our family overseas. We all have encountered times of discouragement, feelings of inadequacy, and the desire to quit and go home.

ReFocusing is a process of leadership development and personal discovery in a dynamic peer-learning community.

The heart of ReFocusing is that it takes leadership development back to the beginning - to the person of God and His plan to use His people to proclaim and establish His Kingdom among the nations. It helps us understand how God shapes leaders over a lifetime and how we can align our lives to His Kingdom purposes for each of us. The learning process equips leaders become more intentional in their development and focused in their leadership, and in turn, increases their capacity for effectively leading and developing others.

Key distinctives of the ReFocusing process include:

  • the integration of leadership development and spiritual formation
  • learning through on-going relational networks and coaching that encourage lifelong learning, accountability and personal integrity -  a process not a program
  • an intentional lifelong developmental framework - member development not just member care
  • enabling leaders to see how God has worked in their lives and uniquely shaped them and to be able to clearly articulate their vision and values for life and ministry
  • reproducibility - giving leaders tools for developing others

History of ReFocusing

ReFocusing has been applied around the world. It has been used to encourage local church leaders in more than 40 nations, including Hungary, Romania, Poland, France, Russia, Great Britain, Venezuela, Kenya, the Middle East, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and North America.

The first pilot network specifically designed for cross-cultural missionaries was pioneered in Cambodia in the Spring of 2007, with 19 leaders representing 10 mission and relief/development organizations.

The first yearlong network was begun in January of 2008, with others following in  2009 and 2010. So far 66 missionary and NGO leaders, hailing from 14 sending nations and representing 31 different organizations, have participated. These would include Southern Baptists, World Team, World Relief, FHI (formerly Food for the Hungry), Mission to Unreached People, International Teams, CRM/InnerCHANGE, Bethany Fellowship, and Destiny Rescue.

Another Network has started in Japan in 2009.
